Cloyne Tower

There are several round towers remaining in
Ireland. They were a refuge from attack where the people would
climb up on a ladder and enter the tower, then pull up the ladder
so that they would be safe in the event of an attack. Often church
sacred items would be taken there for safe keeping.

Just under the Tower were beautiful blue bells."I remember
on that day we had driven into Cloyne, the Mercedes making the
trip with ease and great comfort and my daughter now relaxed at
the wheel, a Grandson sleeping with the gentle rock of the auto,
my Wife and I all eyes with the wonder of the day. I really didn't
know what to expect and when the huge Round Tower came into view
it was marvellous! We parked the auto and walked in the cool air
over to the foot of the tower and a grand surprise awaited us
there-a wondrous violet and blue carpet of bluebells in all their
majesty and splendour were spread everywhere. It was a beautiful
moment. It was a pristine moment, one of those things you never
forget as long as you live. Life is full of beautiful moments
and that truly was one of them-in my mind forever."
BT speaking of Cloyne--May, 2001

Cloyne
is a very old village. It is small and has narrow streets. There
is evidence of human activity since about 2000 B. C. In 500 B.
C. St. Colman founded his monastery here. Cloyne has a cathedral
and Round Tower which is very interesting.

Another street scene in Cloyne.
