My daughter Susan found herself in London in April, 2002. She loves the City and all its wonderfully historic places, and of course is a great fan of Jane Austen, so really she loves all of England. She had promised to take some photos for me, for my Flower Web Page, and so she did. The photos are magnificent, they are beautiful, and they 'tug on one's heart-strings' a bit as you look at them. Here are a few of my favorite quotations about flowers, and they say much about what I am thinking when I view these pristine photos. ----B. Townsend, June, 2002

"Flowers are the beautiful hieroglyphics of nature by which she indicates how much she loves us."

----Johann Von Goerthe, German Poet

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts."

----Rachel Carson

Daffodils, near St. Pauls Cathedral, London

"A host of golden daffodils,

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze."

----William Wordsworth

"There are always flowers for those who want to see them."

----Henri Matisse

"If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere."

----Vincent Van Gogh

The Daffodils - by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Alone the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced: but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed-and gazed-but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
