"The writing of a poem is like a child throwing stones into a mineshaft. You compose first, then you listen for the reverberation."

---Fenton, James

I have always liked and enjoyed poetry. I remember in college studying American Literature and World Literature. That was indeed long ago, and the interest remains with me. The kind of poetry I write is free verse. That is poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular meter. I like to say that my poetry is in a 'conversation format.' This means to me that it is like you(the reader) and I(the writer) sitting down and talking face to face, and I describe something to you that I am thinking about a flower or a place or a bird or something. Sprinkled throughout my Digital Flowers web page is poetry that I have written about a photo of something. I have decided to archive the free verse in one page for those that would like to see and read all of them. I am an amateur; and beg your patience and understanding of this writing. It is for us who love flowers, birds and other things. If you want really wonderful and meaningful poetry read Robert Frost or Carl Sandburg. I love their writing. Enjoy your reading!! I have done these for you, the reader. BT-June 25, 2007.

A Soaring Red-Tail

The Red Tail Hawk,

Soaring high above

On the thermals

Views its domain from

Its vast vantage point,

Searching the hills

For sustenence.

We who are earthbound

Cannot imagine its environment

Above the earth so high in the sky.

Flying free in the space of time.

I know when Spring is coming.

The blossoms speak it clearly,

With their neon hues so

Generously spread throughout

The terraces of the garden.

The winter is moving out,

At least here on the coastal plains

Where we reside with nature

Painting the landscape with beauty.

The cold days and nights go somewhere else;

While we bask and watch the season

Gently meander into our lives again, as before,

Bringing peace, tranquility, peace of mind

And a feast of colorful blossoms.

The Cold Garden

The winter is cold in the garden,

As I walked today in the coolness.

Life slows down in such,

But signs of life are there-

The blossoms, the buds, the new tiny leaves.

Life continues in our plant kingdom,

Soon to burst out in elegance.

A Butterfly Walk

I walked just yesterday with

The butterflies that some call

Flying Flowers.

Surrounded by grace and elegance.

Each flying flower flitting about to a blossom or leaf.

The peace and tranquility coming with their presence,

A gift in this world of anxiety and unease.

Just Down The Road

I know where these bright blossoms are,

And it's just down the road.

Go past the bird house,

Along the high hedges of blackberry vines,

Rising high above ones view down the narrow road;

Then onward toward the sea

To the lovely home across from the farm.

It is a peaceful place and a beautiful place

Where dwell the Grandsons so loved

And their family.

I return many times down that narrow road

Both in fact and mind.

It is delightful to be in their presence!

I Walked With Spring

I walked with Spring this morning,
In the garden where the buds are flowing.
The warm sun, like a blanket, bringing new life to the flowers.

Each sunbeam caressing the geraniums,
And the alstromeria forming its buds at the plants tip.
And the Iceberg Roses sending forth their leaves to the branches.

The Mockingbirds are here! They sing to us.
Revealing the ever recurring story of Spring.
